Konnect Africa to launch SmartWiFi in Kenya.

Konnect Africa, a satellite Internet solutions provider has announced the introduction of new public hotspots in Kenya. SmartWiFi service will be available in public area like schools, shops, hotel and healthcare centre in the country. According to the company, Internet access can be extended for wider reach using off-the-shelf WiFi repeaters.

The SmartWiFi is an aim by Konnect Africa to support connectivity deployment in remote areas and actively contribute to African countries’ broadband development plans. SmartWiFi will be installed in urban and rural areas underserved by terrestrial networks.

The service will enable users to access the internet from a distance of several hundred metres around the hotspot. Access can be extended to several kilometres through off-the-shelf Wi-Fi repeaters.

How it works
WiFi users will be required to buy vouchers or use mobile money payments to access the various internet packages. Satellite-based internet, unlike mobile wireless or fibre technologies, is not dependent on terrestrial infrastructure and is capable of providing connectivity in the remote areas.

SmartWIFI will be available in all countries covered by Konnect Africa’s satellite broadband service. The new hotspot service will be deployed in partnership with local Internet service providers and telecom operators in strategic areas across Sub-Saharan Africa.
