MTN donates R500 000 to flood relief fund.
Telecommunications company, MTN, announced on Thursday 12 October 2017 that the company is donating R500 000 to help relief efforts in those affected communities after the recent floods in Durban and parts of Gauteng, South Africa which have devastated the lives of many South Africans. The announcement came as Durban prepares to host the MTN8 Final, one of the highlights of the South African footballing calendar, this weekend.
“We are thrilled to be hosting our MTN8 Final in Durban, but we also know that many locals are facing desperate conditions right now, as a result of this ferocious flooding. We are collaborating with the Red Cross which has people on the ground in KZN and Gauteng, so they are best placed to allocate this half a million Rand donation,” said Jacqui O’Sullivan, MTN SA spokesperson.
In addition to the corporate donation, MTN has also created an SMS donation line, to offer its customers an opportunity to make their own contribution to relief efforts.
“We’ve tried to make it as easy and as accessible as possible for our customers to help those affected by the floods. A small and simple SMS donation will make a huge difference in the lives of these South Africans and we call on our customers to help out in whichever way they can,” O’Sullivan said.
To donate R5, MTN customers can SMS “GIFT” to 36322 and to donate R10, SMS “GIFT” to 38360. The SMS messages will be free and customers will only be billed for their donation.
MTN concluded their release by stating that: “Together, we can help brighten the lives of those affected and get these communities back on track, as quickly as possible.”
